Finger cymbals workshop with Asharah: Register now!

Registration is now up for my finger cymbal workshop at Saffron Dance, this Sunday, April 19th.  Even if you’re a beginner dancer and you’ve never played finger cymbals (also known as zills or sagat) before, this workshop will help you integrate these lovely instruments into your dance.  Details below, or just register now at Saffron Dance’s website.

The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
$65 Online Registration | $75 At Door

Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

Saffron Dance’s Saphira profiled in Washington Post

This past weekend, the Washington Post profiled Saphira, owner and creator of Saffron Studio, in their weekly magazine.  Saphira quit her law practice, took an enormous cut in income, and a leap of faith to pursue her dream of owning her own dance studio.  Saffron is one of the studios where I teach, and I love the welcoming and warm environment there.  This article is really timely for me, as I just quit my day job in an effort to follow my own dream of being a dancer and performer.

Read “An Advocate for the Shimmy” on the Washington Post website. Be sure to watch the video too!

Gothla US in LA Weekly

Liz Ohanesian of the LA Weekly, the Los Angeles area’s alternative paper, wrote a wonderful article covering Gothla US which took place this past weekend in Pomona, California. Photos, interview snippets, and more about the largest Gothic bellydance festival in the world.

Changes ahead!

After much deliberation, examination of finances, and contingency planning I am…

…quitting my day job.

It’s scary and there are a lot of uncertainties, but the sense of imminent freedom is exhilarating. I have several creative projects on the horizon, just waiting to be tackled. Most of all, I’m excited about being able to give more energy to my dance, and even more to my students.

Updates on new projects and ventures soon to come…

Wish me luck! I couldn’t make this leap without all of you.

A spirit with a vision is a dream with a mission…
