• One song for a work-in-progress choreography on iPod (or similar mp3 player)

In April, I’m bringing back the very popular workshop “Dancing Your Demons”.  This workshop has been praised by dancers around the world. No kidding!  I’m also constantly adding and changing the format for this workshop, so it’s always a different experience every time.

Workshop Description:

Within each one of us is our true, instinctual self, and we often ignore or repress her (or him) in our everyday lives. Our instinctual self is not rational, and yet to dance to our fullest, we must acknowledge our instinct, acting upon it without second-guessing it and while still harnessing it for a clean and stage-worthy performance. Our instincts are raw, untamed and absolutely essential to a dancer who wishes to give a moving and expressive performance.

In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through physical exercises aimed at drawing out instinctual responses to music and other students in class. She will also explain her own emotional preparation process, giving guidelines and tips on how to be “in the moment” before you even take the stage. Students must leave their egos at the door, and judgmental or critical behavior will not be tolerated.

This class will draw heavily from the Jamila Salimpour format, but I’ll also be teaching elements of my own personal stylization such as my robotic and mechanical accents, elegance and flow, and crisp hip work. I’ll also be teaching short dance combinations.

The new class schedule, as of January 11th:

Tuesdays, 6:45-8pm: Belly Dance Drills. (This is the former Wednesday night class.)
Wednesdays, 8:15-9:30pm: Classic and Modern Tribal Style Belly Dance.

Belly Dance Drills and Technique. Wednesdays, 8:15pm-9:30pm

Join us at the Old Mill in Lexington we’ll be drilling, working, and learning hardcore technique in a fun and supportive environment. $15 drop-in, $125 for a ten class card.

So you want to be a belly dancer? Core Bellydance Fundamentals. Thursdays, 8:15pm – 9:15pm

We’re kickin’ it old school at the beautiful Gyrotonic Vista Studio and learning the fundamentals of belly dance. With a focus on safe execution of movement and muscular isolation, this class offers challenging yet accessible material for dancers of all skill levels. And I mean that – all skill levels! Bring your finger cymbals. $15 drop-in, $125 for a ten-class card.

Next up – Gothla US, which is one of my OTHER favorite events of the year.  While I brought out an old-school-meets-new-school belly dance performance at TribalCon, my Xenomorph from Belly Horror will be returning to the stage again at Gothla next weekend.  I love presenting so many different styles of dance that reflect the many different aspects of my personality.

After Gothla, I head to Europe – Switzerland and Italy.  I have never been to Switzerland, and I’m so excited!  Friends of mine will be taking me to thermal baths, which my tired dancer/traveler body will greatly enjoy.

When I return home, at the end of March, I will travel down to my new home, Columbia, South Carolina, to rehearse with Delirium Tribal Belly Dance Company and Columbia Alternacirque for the outdoor season opener, “Masquerade”.
